Preparing Side Housings for Resurfacing/LappingSubmitted On: October 28, 2006, 10:00 pm
This progress is done when the plates have had excessive wear damage to the sides from the side seal grooves, pings, or any other type of wear. However, this is a process that can be done if the plates are still within spec.
You can only resurface a side housing so far untill it is usless. In otherwords, if your damage is so deep into the side it can not always be repaired. It is also good to note that the more material you remove, the more likely you are going to have to re-nitrite the plates. The re-nitriting process is to reharden the steel after a plate has been grinded. Sometimes if you remove to much material, your sides are then weakened because the hardening surface has been removed by the grinding process.
The goal of preparing side housings to get resufraced is to simply make it so the plates side flat on their sides. Because the plates are being resurfaced on their sides, it needs a flat side to resurface on. As shown in the video if the plate cannot sit flat, there is no way for the machine to do a correct lapping job. We we remove components from the side housings in order to make it sit flat. Some of the tools needed for this process can be order through the rotary engine parts store by Pineapple Racing.
